Hydrotherapy for Dogs
The benefits and why we love Ruff and Tumble here in Wylie TX!
As pet owners, we always strive to ensure our dogs lead happy, healthy, and active lives. We’re mindful of their nutrition, physical activity, and well-being, but did you know that hydrotherapy is a powerful form of exercise that can greatly benefit your dog’s health? If you're looking for an exercise routine that improves your dog’s strength, mobility, and overall fitness, hydrotherapy ticks all these boxes.
How would you like to see your dog thriving well into their teens? My own dog Sam, who we named our hydrotherapy centre after (Scuba Sam's Canine Hydrotherapy Center), is 15 this year! He is a Labrador, with spondylosis but he is going great! I wholeheartedly believe that hydrotherapy has helped Sam to maintain his muscle, strength and manage his arthritic pain.
What is Hydrotherapy for Dogs?
Hydrotherapy involves the use of water to treat and manage injuries, improve fitness, and aid in the recovery process. This form of therapy typically involves swimming or walking on an underwater treadmill, where the buoyancy of water reduces the impact on your dog’s joints, allowing them to exercise without putting excessive stress on their body. It’s a low-impact workout that can be tailored to your dog’s individual needs, making it an excellent option for dogs of all ages, breeds, and fitness levels.
The Benefits of Hydrotherapy:
Improves Joint Health and Mobility
For dogs suffering from arthritis, hip dysplasia, or other joint-related conditions, hydrotherapy can significantly improve their mobility and reduce pain. The buoyancy of water supports your dog’s weight, which helps reduce pressure on their joints, allowing them to move more freely without discomfort. Over time, this can lead to increased flexibility and better overall joint health.
Rehabilitation After Surgery or Injury
Hydrotherapy is often used as a rehabilitation tool for dogs recovering from surgery or injury. Swimming or walking on an underwater treadmill helps rebuild muscle strength and range of motion without the risk of further damage. This is especially beneficial for dogs who are recovering from orthopaedic surgeries or those who have experienced traumatic injuries.
Boosts Cardiovascular Fitness
Hydrotherapy helps strengthen the heart and lungs, improving circulation and stamina. It’s particularly helpful for older dogs or those who struggle to walk on land, as the resistance of water can provide a more controlled and gentler workout. We love working with the older dogs as they tend to be super calm when swimming and it gives us great joy to see how happy they are afterwards.
