How To Choose The Right Dog Bed
The truth is, finding the right bed isn't just about picking a colour that matches your rug (though that helps!). It’s about realising that our dogs spend more than half their lives asleep. If they’re sleeping on something that’s basically a glorified pancake, their joints are going to suffer from it in the future.
The Squish Test
When you’re looking at beds, give them the squish test. If you can feel the floor through the bed when you kneel on it, your dog is definitely feeling it too. Older dogs and growing puppies especially need that orthopedic support to keep their developing or aging joints properly cushioned.
That’s why we were so particular when choosing our foam; we wanted a double-thickness mattress, high-grade upholstery foam topped with memory foam, that actually holds its shape instead of flattening out after a month of use. It should be soft enough for joints to yield, but supportive enough that they never hit the cold floor.
Easy To Clean
We love them, but dogs are messy. They bring in mud, they shed, or can just be generally smelly at times. When you’re shopping around, make sure you can easily remove the cover and throw it in the wash. Having Labradors, Spaniels and Terriers ourselves (who like to go in any body of water they can find), creating a bed that was easy to wash was high on our priority list.
With this we went a step further and created towelling bed covers. These work similar to a fitted sheet, so they are easy to whip off, pop in the washing machine and dryer, and fit back over the bed!
“I can honestly say that the Burnham Bolster Bed is the best
bed Demi has ever had. She prefers it to ours! She sleeps well in it and is
settled at night – I’ve seen a big difference.”

Making it Last
At the end of the day, a dog bed shouldn't be something you have to replace every six months. It should be a piece of furniture. That’s the philosophy we leaned into, using durable canvas, waterproof and velvet fabrics that can actually stand up to daily use for years to come.
Each of our beds feature a waterproof liner, so if your puppy has an accident or your dog is incontinent, you don't have to worry about the liquid soaking in and ruining the bed.
A good bed really does make all the difference for your dog. We want to do everything we can to ensure our dogs' joints and muscles age as healthily as they can, and a supportive bed is the best place to start.
